Framework House

Framework House is an extensive refurbishment and extension of a terraced house in Clapham, London. The project is organised around an expressive concrete frame set within the existing structure, forming new volumes and voids that tie new and old together. Studio McW sourced the property and guided its purchase and redesign.

The clients, a family relocating from an apartment, wanted to maintain a sense of lateral living within a terraced house. The brief called for a flexible, functional home suited to everyday living, hosting and working from home, resolved through a raw material palette of concrete, steel and timber.

Studio McW inverted the traditional terraced ground floor plan to create a clear front-to-back flow. Dining is positioned at the front, connected through a central Poggenpohl kitchen to a living room that occupies the widest part of the plan at the rear, opening directly onto the garden.

The concrete frame was left raw and exposed throughout, complemented by herringbone timber floors, bespoke joinery and metalwork. A concrete stair rises beside the frame, toplit by overhead glazing. Above, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a dual-aspect office are located on the first floor, the latter looks into the living room below. The primary bedroom suite and bathroom on the top floor continue the raw material palette with warm bespoke joinery.
